Advanced Emphasis
Advanced Emphases
Advanced Emphases are fundamental components of the Circumpolar Studies Program. There are currently 13 Advanced Emphases being offered by UArctic Member Institutions.
The following list of Advanced Emphases are available for Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies/Northern Studies Degree completion at select UArctic Member Institutions:

Aboriginal Public Administration
(University of Saskatchewan; onsite & online delivery, subject to availability; social science based)
Arctic Governance
(University of Lapland; onsite delivery only; social science based)
Environmental Impact Assessment
(University of Saskatchewan; onsite & online delivery, subject to availability; natural and social science based)
Management of Local and Regional Development
(Finnmark University College; onsite delivery only; available only in the Spring semester; social science based)
Northern Peoples and Environments
(University of Northern British Columbia; onsite & online delivery, subject to availability; social science based)
Northern Scandinavian Politics and Society
(Bodø University College; onsite & online delivery; available only in the Fall semester; social science based)
Northern Tourism and Outdoor Recreation
(University of Northern British Columbia; onsite & online delivery, subject to availability; social science based)
The following list of Advanced Emphases are possible Exchange Programmes, but they are currently only approved for Confirmation of Completion for the Circumpolar Studies Program:
Arctic Environmental Technology
(University Centre in Svalbard; onsite delivery only; available only in the Fall semester; science based)
Circumpolar Ecosystems, Resource Use and Management
(University of Tromsø; onsite delivery only; available only in Spring semester; natural science based)
Geographical-Nature Conditions of the Territories of Cryolitozone
(Sakha State University; onsite delivery only; currently only available to Russian students; science based)
International Project Management
(Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences; onsite delivery only, starts in Fall semester; social science based)
Polar Meteorology and Oceanography
(University Centre in Svalbard; onsite delivery only; available only in the Fall semester; science based)
For UArctic member institutions that do not have an approved AE, the Office of Undergraduate Studies has provided students with the opportunity to apply for a designated Advanced Emphasis. A student from a UArctic member institution can select a suite of five courses on a specific northern topic, and request approval from the Dean of Undergraduate Studies to recognize the submission as a Designated AE that will count towards the Certificate of Accomplishment upon completion of the BCS program.
Designated Advanced Emphasis
Your home institution may offer Advanced Emphases that reflect its particular area or areas of expertise. You may also choose to complete your degree or work toward your degree at another member institution of the University of the Arctic that offers an Advanced Emphasis in your area of interest, with your home institution’s approval.
