Research Centre CEARC - University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines

The University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ) opened the research centre CEARC (“Cultures, Environment, Arctic, Representation, Climate”) in 2009 to support interdisciplinary Arctic and adaptation studies.

Headed by professor Jan Borm and co-directed by professor Jean-Paul Vanderlinden, CEARC’s missions include observation, training and dissemination of knowledge on Arctic territories and societies in the light of their history, while developing also transnational and interdisciplinary approaches to climate change and strategies of adaptation. CEARC pilotes a series of high-profile international research projects such as ARTISTICC (Belmont Forum International Opportunity Fund), BRISK (French National Research Funding Agency ANR) or POLARIS (FP7-Marie-Curie-People-IRSES).

In 2010, CEARC created the international and multidisciplinary Master programme "Arctic Studies" entirely taught in English by well-known specialists from all research laboratories of the UVSQ and guests lecturers from outside the university. This diploma of advanced Arctic studies, new in France and Europe, offers two fields of specialization: science and technology, as well as social sciences and humanities.
