New Centre at the University of Tromsø

The Research Council of Norway has granted the status of Centre of Excellence (SFF centre) to the Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate at the University of Tromsø starting from 2013. The centre will study methane release – in subsea methane hydrate reservoirs, the seabed and the Arctic Ocean – to ascertain its future impact on the marine environment and global climate system. The new centre is led by Professor Jurgen Mienert, who also leads the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Geology, and will receive an annual allocation of 14 million NOK.
