Indigenous Teacher Education Thematic Network
A thematic group, initiated by the Sami University College, was established at the 2004 UArctic Council Meeting to promote international cooperation among institutions delivering programs for indigenous teacher education. The Sami University College, Norway, and Nunavut Arctic College, Canada, agreed to pilot a mutual exchange of students and faculty members starting in 2005. The program has been named Verdde, a Sami word meaning “a mutually beneficial exchange”. In the program, a student and faculty group from each institution travel together in an exchange visit for approximately one month. The exchange could possibly also include “elders” although this raises funding challenges.
