Founded in 1896, today Tomsk Polytechnic University is a leader of Russian higher engineering education. TPU takes 386th position in the world and 10th position in Russia according to the QS World University Rankings 2017; according to THE World University Ranking 2018, TPU will take 301-350th position in the world and the 3rd place in Russia.
TPU has been actively developing its international expertise since 1991. Today, international cooperation is considered as an integral component of the University evolution and an important indicator of its performance. Moreover, TPU is the first Russian university and an active member in 9 international associations and consortia, including CESAER, CLUSTER, SEFI, and others.
TPU is regarded as a unique research platform for world-leading researchers to deal with the issues of global climate change and identify the role of permafrost degradation in the imbalance of the current carbon cycle.
Under the supervision of the renowned scientists the research team is carrying out the research on the basis of TPU. Among those who head the research team work are as follows: Igor Semiletov, Professor, Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who received funding from the Government of the Russian Federation for the project Siberian Arctic Shelf as a Source of Greenhouse Gases of Planetary Significance and Professor Natalia Shakhova, who conducts a research on the project Transport Dynamics and Carbon Transformations in the Arctic System of the Land-Shelf-Atmosphere Cycle under the Conditions of Global Warming and Permafrost Degradation, whose project received funding from the Russian Science Foundation.
Over the past three years, TPU research team jointly with Russian and international partners managed to organize five full-scale summer and winter expeditions to the Eastern Arctic seas, which made it possible to identify the main processes leading to the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, as well as to carry out the first assessment of the impact of degradation of the underwater permafrost on climate and ecological situation on the planet; hold an international forum that brought together the world-leading experts from Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States and Italy; publish over 50 articles in top best international journals, including Nature Geoscience. Nature Communications.
