  • Online Research Seminar: Navigating identity & self-worth through an ‘othering’ milieu: chequered journey of an ‘alien’ academic in higher education
    • This session was the last of our monthly online seminar sessions for the TN for 2024/25. It was led on this occasion by TN member Kalpana Vijayavarathan-R Dean of the School of Education in the University of the Faroes.
Abstract: The academic environment, often marked by exclusionary practices, can be examined through the lenses of racial and hierarchical microaggressions. The author's experience of being ‘othered’ in professional and cultural encounters highlights the challenges of navigating workplace dynamics while confronting alienation shaped by several factors. Through a process of negotiating perspectives, the journey toward self-acceptance emerges as a central theme. In this complex landscape, the resilience of immigrants plays a crucial role in fostering both self-empowerment and a sense of belonging.
