Hólar University (HU) is a centre for education and research in the fields of equine sciences, aquaculture and aquatic biology and studies in tourism, event and hospitality management. HU endeavors to enhance knowledge and professionalism in its fields of research and teaching. To achieve this, HU aims to contribute significantly to the academic and professional communities by maintaining high standards in teaching, vigorous research programmes, strong industry relations and active international collaboration. All of which is reflected in the values of the university: professionalism, respect, and innovation.
HU was formally established on the 1st of July 2007 and is one of seven universities in Iceland. However, the culture of the University is rooted in the agricultural school which was established at Hólar in 1882. The initial steps in the development from an agricultural school to a university were taken in 1997, when the first tertiary courses were offered at Hólar. The campus at Hólar is the main centre of teaching and education in the equine and tourism departments, as well as administration. In Sauðárkrókur, 30 km from the main campus, HU runs a facility for teaching and research in aquaculture and fish biology. HU recruit’s students from all around Iceland. In addition, a significant number of students in some programmes are international.
HU is engaged in international research projects with partners from America, Europe and Africa. And participates in international programs related to education, for example Erasmus+ student and staff exchange, student interns from Europe, and collaborative MS programme in Scandinavia.
