The Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) was established on December 31, 1978, affiliated with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China. As the largest national non-profit multidisciplinary research institution, CRAES carries out innovative and basic scientific research on environmental protection, in compliance with the national strategy of sustainable development. CRAES is also dedicated to providing strategic foresight and systematic technological support to national environmental management and decision-making, meeting the demands of technical engineering and consultation regarding major environmental issues during social and economic development, and playing an irreplaceable role in enhancing the capacity of scientific decision-making for environmental protection in China.
Through the implementation of the “Talent Strategy, Scientific and Technological Innovation Strategy, and Environmental Standard Strategy”, innovative systems for environmental research has have formed in CRAES, covering all aspects of environmental sciences, including water environment, atmospheric environment, ecology, climate change, environmental engineering technology, environmental safety, cleaner production and circular economy, vehicle emission control, and development of environmental standards. Since its establishment, CRAES has gained notable achievements in the fields of environmental capacity, acid rain, lake eutrophication, urban air pollution, and solid waste pollution control, environmental risk assessment and control, and biodiversity conservation, etc.
CRAES has many years of experience in environmental management at the provincial and national level, including setting environmental standards, providing key advice to policy makers, and assisting with implementation of international conventions. CRAES has established cooperation partnerships with national-level institutions of the EU, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Korea, among other countries. Currently, CRAES is involved in 700 research projects with an annual funding of 55 million Euro.
