About Police Scotland

Police Scotland was established on 1 April 2013 and is responsible for policing across the whole of Scotland, some 28,168 square miles, covering a third of the United Kingdom’s landmass with a unique range of urban, rural, island and remote communities.

It is the second largest force in the UK with 22,000 officers and staff working together for the people of Scotland.

Our purpose is to improve the safety and wellbeing of people, places and communities in Scotland, focusing on Keeping People Safe in line with our values of integrity, fairness and respect and with human rights at the heart of everything we do.

Scottish Police College - Training, leadership and development

Tulliallan is both Police Scotland’s Corporate Headquarters and a key training venue.

It is one of Police Scotland’s training sites. It holds historical significance to training police officers and staff in Scotland.

It is set in 90 acres of parkland in the centre of Scotland. The early 19th century Tulliallan Castle is at its heart.

It is the United Kingdom’s only central Police College which provides all police training in one establishment.

Tulliallan has also been Scotland’s central recruit training base for over 50 years. It opened for police training in 1954.

We provide many different training and learning opportunities, including (but not limited to):

  • Leadership and Management Courses
  • Detective, Covert and Crime Prevention Training
  • Road Policing and Driver Training
  • Crime and Intelligence Analysis and Emerging Technology Training
  • Police Officer Recruit Training

We deliver training in many different ways:

  • Classroom based teaching
  • Lectures and conferences
  • Immersive ‘Hydra’ suite learning
  • E-learning
  • Practical and Situational training.

All of our courses and programmes are subject to the Police Scotland National Framework for Quality Assurance in Training and Education.

As a Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Credit Rating Body, and SQA Approved Centre many of our programmes also carry formal recognised SCQF credit.
