First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources

The First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources, China is a comprehensive oceanographic research institute engaged in applied and basic researches, high technology development and serving the public. The institute aims at promoting the marine science and technology progress and serving the marine management, marine safety and marine economy development and is an important marine science research entity in the national science and technology innovation system. The main research fields include the distributions and variabilities of natural environmental elements in Chinese seas, their adjacent oceans and polar sea areas, the marine resources and environmental geology, the generating mechanism and prediction method of marine disasters, the variabilities of marine ecology environment, the remote sensing oceanography and marine information system, the assessment, protection and regulation of marine environment, the marine high technology development and marine comprehensive management sciences.

As the first and the largest institute of the State Oceanic Administration, FIO has the most complete marine scientific subjects such as Physical Oceanography, Marine Climatology, Maine Geology, Maine Geophysics, Marine Chemistry, Marine Biology, Maine Ecology, Maine Physics, Marine Engineering and Marine information, and is the main force of Chinese polar scientific expedition and polar research programs. Being an active institute in marine science and technology cooperation and exchange, FIO has established cooperative relationship with more than 100 institutions/organisations, and has signed 23 cooperation agreements, is the member of seven international organizations, has five international cooperation base/centers.
