Battelle Memorial Institute

Battelle Memorial Institute is a private nonprofit applied science and technology development company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Battelle is a charitable trust organized as a nonprofit corporation. Originally focusing on contract research and development work in the areas of metals and material science, Battelle is now an international science and technology enterprise that explores emerging areas of science, develops and commercializes technology, and manages laboratories for customers.

Battelle is governed by a Board of Directors and led by a management team. Together they serve as stewards of the vision of our founder, Gordon Battelle. Our leaders represent a rich blend of expertise gained through years of experience. Battelle's vision is to be a major force in science and technology discovery and in the translation of knowledge into innovative applications that have significant societal and economic impacts.Our employees – called “Solvers” for the solutions they provide to difficult challenges – are the glue that holds our company together and why we’re still here after more than 85 years.

Battelle/NEON/Arctic involvement:

Battelle Manages the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). NEON is the first observatory network of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of ecological change at continental scales over multiple decades. 8 of the 81 sites along with a research facility are located in the Alaskan Arctic. Additionally, Battelle manages multiple environmental remediation and ecological assessment projects throughout the Alaskan Arctic.

Battelle works closely with indigenous communities throughout the Arctic. Investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs for students, educators and community members. Battelle Collaborates with the communities to develop and enhance capacities and develop strategies to promote staff effectiveness and improve teaching and learning environments.
