On the first day of the conference, there will be a ceremonial laying of the foundation stone of the new Sámi University building which is planned to be completed in 2009.
 
On the second day, the focus will be on the establishment of indigenous peoples’ universities. Established in 1989, the Sámi University College is in the process of developing into a full university. One of the main objectives of the conference is to learn from other indigenous peoples and hear their experiences with regard to building institutions of higher education for indigenous peoples.
