Conference Announcement: Jokkmokk Winter Conference 2009

Jokkmokk Winter ConferencePlanning for the Third Annual Jokkmokk Winter Conference 2010 is well underway. This year's theme is on "Changing Climates: The new political and environmental reality for Northern Communities" and will use the December 2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP 15) as a basis for discussion and dialogue. The event is hosted by the municipality of Jokkmokk, Sweden and runs from February 1-4 2010 and is intended for Young Professionals, Student and Activists, that will be the Future Decision Makers in the North.

Conference Objectives:

The Jokkmokk Winter Conference provides a forum where young professionals and students from across political and disciplinary boundaries to:

  • Discuss impacts of climate change on the circumarctic and the global connections
  • Learn from senior climate policy and sustainable development professionals
  • Develop skills for communicating with policy makers
  • Form new collaborations and partnerships

Expected Outcomes:

As a result of this conference, it is expected that participants:

  • Understand the impacts of climate change on all areas of the Arctic and global ramifications
  • Establish mentor relationships with policy and sustainable development professionals
  • Acquire skills needed to share their views on Arctic related climate issues with policy leaders and the general public
  • Create working groups to carry forward ideas and action items generated from the discussions
