Arctic 2050: Towards ecosystem-based management in a changing Arctic Ocean
Wednesday 12 March 2014, Brussels
The 4th European Marine Board Forum organized jointly with the European Polar Board, and recognized as an official ICARP III event, will focus on the challenges of a changing Arctic Ocean for sustainable ecosystem-based management. A key element of the forum is to discuss possible“2050” scenarios for Arctic Change and the corresponding implications for human health and well-being.
• The nature and consequences of the present ice and glacier melting, anthropogenic contamination, and shifts in the ecosystems including range shifts and invading species.
• The ongoing biodiversity and ecosystem assessments, and the challenge of setting up marine observatories for the complete Arctic system: ice, ocean and biota.
• How we manage Arctic resources of fishing, shipping and oil and gas exploration and, at the same time, protect and conserve the Arctic environment.
The forum will culminate with an open panel discussion on the roles of industry and science in achieving sustainable management of the Arctic Ocean.
