New UArctic Publication: A Pocket Guide to Academic Publishing

A Pocket Guide to Academic Publishing_cover.png

A Pocket Guide to Academic Publishing was written in the course of a seminar on academic publishing at the Polar Cooperation Research Centre, Kobe University, Japan. The seminar and book emerged as a response to the absence of a textbook on the ‘hows,’ ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of academic publishing, the knowledge of which students have to acquire rather through learning-by-doing than through knowing them beforehand.

The book is a guide through the different steps of academic publishing — from writing the paper up until the publication of the article. It provides first-hand experience from an Editor’s perspective and offers explanations for different concepts and practices such as peer-reviewing or the Impact Factor while also discussing the benefits and drawbacks of article-based and monograph doctoral dissertations.

Early career researchers will find answers to many questions surrounding the publication of their research and will be well-equipped for the writing and publishing of their first research article.

The author, Nikolas Sellheim, is the Editor of Polar Record, the journal of the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, published by Cambridge University Press. He is currently a postdoctoral research fellow under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the Polar Cooperation Research Centre, Kobe University, Japan.
