Today in Arkhangelsk, during the Arctic: Territory of Dialogue International Arctic Forum, the University of the Arctic (UArctic) signed a cooperation agreement with the newly created National Arctic Research and Educational Consortium, Russia (NAREC).

NAREC is an association of universities, research institutes and other organizations working in the field of staff training, research and economic and business activities in the Russian Arctic. Consortium focuses on consolidation of resources and competences to provide sustainable development of the territories of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation.

The agreement was signed between UArctic President Lars Kullerud and Northern (Arctic) Federal University (NArFU) Rector Elena Kudryashova on behalf of NAREC. As the majority of the NAREC members are already active members of UArctic and share many common areas of interest, the agreement establishes the intent of the two organizations to actively cooperate. These joint activities include arranging conferences and other events, research partnerships, training and education programs, and advising policy makers.

UArctic President Lars Kullerud noted, "Russia is a tremendously important part of the Arctic and circumpolar cooperation in science and higher education. It is a sign of this importance that the Russian institutions and organizations involved in these activities are increasing their work together within both NAREC and UArctic."
