Online session: "Implementing sustainability at the local level in Alaska"
As part of the activities of the UArctic Thematic Network on Local-scale Planning, Climate Change and
Resilience, John Duffy (University of Alaska, Anchorage) will share highlights of his research which considers
the linkages between local government planning efforts for addressing climate change and associated actions. The event will take place online (via Zoom) on September 19, 2022.
The linkages considered include local comprehensive plans, all hazard plans, climate action plans as well as subdivision and zoning ordinances. John will discuss local government planning powers and their implementation methods, and importantly how these powers and methods are being used to address the challenges of climate change. Focusing on local governments in Alaska, USA, John will also describe some of the attributes associated with local government “willingness” to address climate change.
Welcome remarks and session moderation will be provided by Jeff Birchall (University of Alberta), Thematic Network Lead. This session is supported by the Geography and Planning Students’ Society and the School of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Alberta.
