UArctic appoints Larry Hinzman as new Vice President-International Polar Year

UArctic is excited to announce that Larry Hinzman has joined its senior leadership team as the International Polar Year Vice President.

Larry Hinzman currently serves as the President’s Arctic Professor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks and as lead of the University of Alaska Arctic Leadership Initiative. He was recently named to serve as the University of the Arctic vice president – International Polar Year. He also served in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as the Assistant Director for Polar Sciences and the Executive Director of the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee, with responsibility to lead the effort to develop and implement the 2022-2026 Federal Arctic Research Plan.

From 2014 – 2022, Hinzman served as the Vice-President and then President of the International Arctic Science Committee as well as the U.S. delegate to IASC. Hinzman served as the Vice Chancellor for Research (2015-2020) and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks as well as the Director of the UAF International Arctic Research Center from 2007 to 2015.

Although working broadly in natural and social sciences, Dr. Hinzman’s primary research interests involve permafrost hydrology. He conducted hydrological and meteorological field studies in the Alaskan Arctic continuously for over 35 years while frequently collaborating on complementary research in the Russian and Canadian Arctic. His research efforts have involved characterizing and quantifying hydrological processes and their inter-dependence with climate and ecosystem dynamics. He has championed efforts to improve Indigenous leadership in research and helped develop the White House guidance on Indigenous Knowledge. He has served as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Polar Research Board. He is strongly committed to facilitating national and international partnerships to advance our understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic systems.
