The Northern Connections exhibition is part of the ASAD Network exhibition series Parallel North: Shared Ecocultural Entanglements, curated by Timo Jokela. The exhibition is shown at Café Piha, Oulu, Finland, until the end of October.

Northern Connections project’s exhibition presents artworks created during workshops with pupils from Hamnavoe Primary School (Shetland), Unøy–Lurøy School (Norway), and Vikajärvi School (Finland). The works explore young people’s relationships with their local environments and possible futures. In Vikajärvi, the workshops focused on young people’s hopes and images of the future. In Hamnavoe and Unøy–Lurøy, the exhibition focuses particularly on local birds as a way to explore more-than-human perspectives. Participants learned about the birds living in their own surroundings and considered what these birds might need in the future, as well as how humans and birds might continue to share these places.

Still images from video artworks created by the young participants are shown in this exhibition. Together, the works offer glimpses into young people’s images of the future and how they imagine the future of their local environments and the more-than-human lives they share.

The exhibition is made by Suvi Autio and Annamari Manninen from the University of Lapland to present the collaborion in the Sustainable Arts and Design (ASAD) network of the UArctic with Wenche Sørmo, Mette Gårdvik and Karin Stoll front Nord university and Roxane Perunat, Siun Carden and Helen Garbett from University of Highlands and Islands Shetland. The film workshops were conducted by art education students Milja Havuluoto, Veera Salonen, Maria Tenhunen and Annika Tolvanen.

The exhibition is part of the ASAD Network exhibition series Parallel North: Shared Ecocultural Entanglements, curated by Timo Jokela. The exhibition is shown at Café Piha, Kauppurienkatu 7, Oulu, Finland, until the end of October.
