SIOI Horizons Examines Arctic Governance One Century After the Norge

The Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI) has published the second edition of SIOI Horizons, exploring how the Arctic has transformed 100 years after the Norge airship expedition, from climate change and geopolitical competition to governance and NATO’s role.

The SIOI Analysis and Research Unit conducts studies designed to deepen understanding of developments in global governance as well as specific regional or local crisis scenarios. The findings of the Unit’s research are disseminated through conferences, seminars, and roundtable discussions on the subjects analyzed.

In this framework, SIOI maintains extensive collaborations with international think tanks, national institutions, and research organizations. Within the activities of the SIOI Analysis and Research Unit, a key area of work is the production of research papers dedicated to the Unit’s main fields of study. In this context, SIOI Horizons is the new editorial series designed to provide in-depth analysis, innovative perspectives, and multidisciplinary contributions on major issues in international politics and contemporary geopolitical transformations, drawing on the Society’s expertise and areas of activity.

The second edition of SIOI Horizons, entitled “Arctic Governance One Century After the Norge”, explores the profound transformation of the Arctic one hundred years after the historic expedition of the airship Norge led by Umberto Nobile. From climate change to geopolitical competition, from Arctic governance to the role of NATO, and ahead of the release of the SIOI book Artico: Il Vicino Nord, this publication examines how the Far North is becoming one of the most strategically significant regions of the 21st century.

The publication comes at a time of growing international attention toward the Arctic, which is increasingly at the center of global dynamics related to energy security, new maritime routes, technological competition, and tensions between Russia, China, and the Euro-Atlantic community. In this context, Italy is also progressively strengthening its scientific, diplomatic, and strategic role in the region.
