North2north exchange, from Canada to Denmark

This story is written by Nyamae Alloway, student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. It recounts her academic exchange to the University of Southern Denmark, supported by the north2North scholarship.

My name is Nyamae, and I am a third year undergraduate student at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. I major in molecular, microbial and cell biology, with a minor in basic psychology. Thanks to the North2North scholarship’s financial support, I was able to travel to Odense, Denmark to study at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) during the fall semester of 2025.
As a student working to become a veterinarian, this opportunity was an incredible
opportunity to not only practice living away from home, but also to work with seals, porpoises and otters at the SDU lab at Fjord & Bælt marine center. I acquired marine mammal handling skills and the confidence to thrive abroad. It was a little difficult to learn to live alone without the chattering of my family, but I am so proud that I did.
The most impactful aspect of this educational exchange was experiencing a culture
different from my own. To learn how to navigate food, transportation and conversational idiosyncrasies were challenging at times, but incredibly interesting. I even interned at a vet clinic for two days and compared the differences between surgical practices in Denmark versus Newfoundland, Canada.
By covering travel expenses, this scholarship was integral to allowing me to participate in this life altering program. I could not be more grateful. Thank you again for your support and kindness. I hope to be an example that inspires others to broaden their perspectives and life experiences, both within academia and in their personal lives.
