UArctic x LRF Fellows: Research Visit to Hokkaido University on Arctic Marine Heatwaves and Sea Ice

Hokkaido University

From 15–17 December 2025, UArctic x LRF Research Fellow Dr Bahareh Kamranzad visited Hokkaido University to present research on Arctic marine heatwaves and sea ice, while strengthening collaboration with international research groups.

From 15 to 17 December 2025, UArctic x LRF Research Fellow Dr Bahareh Kamranzad visited the Institute of Low Temperature Science at Hokkaido University, hosted by Professor Ralf Greve. During the visit, she met with several research groups and delivered an invited seminar on Arctic marine heatwaves.

The visit, supported by Dr Kirsi Latola from the University of the Arctic, who facilitated engagement with researchers at the Arctic Research Center and strengthened international collaboration.

Dr Kamranzad presented emerging findings from her project, Impact of Marine Heatwaves on Sea Ice for Arctic Navigational Safety. Discussions centred on the evolving coupling between sea surface temperature and sea ice characteristics across multiple timescales, and how this relationship has shifted over the past six decades. A key limitation identified is the lack of high temporal resolution in long-term Arctic sea ice datasets, which continues to constrain robust assessment of changing ice conditions.
