The Thematic Network on Northern Tourism is delighted to invite members and guests to a range of activities and events organised at the UArctic Congress 2026.

Please join us for the three sessions, organised by our members, with presentations on the range of fascinating topics pertinent to tourism and the communities affected by it across the North.

Session 154: Arctic tourism and geopolitical change

Against a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical and economic change, this session explores how tourism is shaping the Arctic today, examining the roles of power, industry and governance in influencing its development across different places and scales.

Session 53: Place-based Strategic Planning for Sustainable Tourism in the Arctic and the North Atlantic

Insights from a pilot project applying the PlaSE Framework in small coastal destinations in Iceland, Norway and the Faroe Islands.

Session 54: Sense of Place as a Foundation for Value-Driven Tourism Development in Small Rural and Coastal Communities

Drawing on case studies from Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Shetland, this session explores themes such as the shift from volume‑ to value‑driven tourism, place‑related meanings in regenerative thinking, and situations where sustainability is contested through local and institutional perspectives.
