Learning about Arctic One Health in the countryside Norway, Evenstad

TN Health: course One Health in Northern Communities and Ecosystems 2026

On June 8-12, 2026 in University of Inland Norway, campus Evenstad, teachers (part of which represented the UArctic Thematic Network on Health and Well-being in the Arctic) and students from Norway, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic and the UK gathered for the onsite 5 ECTS module of the course One Health in Northern Communities and Ecosystems.

The course was developed with help of the UArctic Norwegian funding and after that is hosted by the University of Inland Norway, campus Evenstad. This year the third iteration of the course was held. During the week, the student group explored the dynamic and interdisciplinary world of One Health in the Arctic context. Lectures were given by experts in the field of human, animal and environmental health such Morten Tryland,  John Linnell, and Kayla Buhler (University of Inland Norway), Jörn Klein and Linda Madsen (University of South-Eastern Norway), Javier Sánchez Romano (The Zoological Society of London), Anastasia Emelyanova (University of Oulu), Anna Sofía Veyhe (University of the Faroe Islands), Ingebjørg Helena Nymo (Norwegian Veterinary Institute), Camilla Risvoll (Nordland Research Institute). 

Topics covered student presentations on the topic of their choice, and lectures from the Arctic peoples and communities, environmental contaminants, predators and marine mammals’ perspectives, policy and governance focus, biodiversity and many more connections in a One Health framework.

The students will continue to learn more about these topics in autumn. We hope to get more students next year, keep tuned on the new Call for registration in the news section of the Thematic Network “Health and Well-being in the Arctic”.
