Invitation to help renew the UArctic Circumpolar Studies Curriculum
The Læra Institute for Circumpolar Studies invites educators, researchers, practitioners, and others with an interest in Circumpolar Studies to participate in an online consultation meeting regarding Arctic core curriculum redevelopment.
For more than two decades, the UArctic Circumpolar Studies curriculum has introduced students around the world to the peoples, environments, histories, and contemporary realities of the Circumpolar North. Over those years, Circumpolar Studies itself has grown and matured. New scholarship, new voices, new partnerships, and the increasing leadership of Indigenous scholars and knowledge holders have broadened and enriched our understanding of the Circumpolar North.
The Læra Institute was established, in part, to provide stewardship for the shared Circumpolar Studies curriculum by bringing together the people, ideas, and resources needed to keep it current, engaging, and reflective of the best of contemporary circumpolar scholarship. We encourage those who have helped shape Circumpolar Studies over the past two decades to join us to talk about what today's students should be learning. In the consultations, we will reflect on the strengths of the existing curriculum, consider how the curriculum should respond to changes in both the region and the field, and explore how Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing can be woven more fully throughout the courses.
We hope these conversations will encourage new collaborations and, over time, create opportunities to share ideas, teaching experiences, and emerging scholarship—including through initiatives such as the institute's Circumpolar Studies Annual. We hope to support teams to develop new course materials for the UArctic network. Subject to funding, modest honoraria may be available for contributors who participate in subsequent curriculum development.
