The exhibition Layers of Change brings together photographic works by Norwegian photographer and graphic designer Laila Ingvaldsen and Finnish photographer-researcher Esa Pekka Isomursu.

The exhibition explores changes in northern environments and how photography makes them perceptible. Laila Ingvaldsen’s documentary work follows ecological restoration in Junkerdal Nature Reserve. Esa Pekka Isomursu’s works, in turn, extend the perception of landscape beyond visible light.

Together, the works ask what can be seen in nature, what remains invisible, and how photography shapes our understanding of a changing environment.

The exhibition is connected to the Observation of Change art and science project, in which artists and researchers have examined ecological restoration and environmental change in Junkerdal, Northern Norway.

The exhibition is part of the ASAD Network exhibition series Parallel North: Shared Ecocultural Entanglements, curated by Timo Jokela.

The exhibition is part of the official Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programme.
