UArctic Congress 2026 named Ambassador Initiative of the Year in the Faroe Islands

The award was presented at Visit Faroe Islands’ annual Ambassador Day on 3 September, where University of the Faroe Islands colleagues were recognised for their efforts to bring major international conferences to the Faroe Islands.

Held in Tórshavn from 26-29 May 2026, UArctic Congress brought together more than 1,400 participants from across the Arctic and beyond, making it the largest international conference ever held in the Faroe Islands.

The Congress was hosted by the University of the Faroe Islands in cooperation with the Faroese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Culture and the Faroe Marine Research Institute, with support from numerous partners, suppliers and members of the local community.

The Ambassador Initiative of the Year award recognises the extensive work behind the Congress, including the development of its academic programme, coordination, communications and the many practical arrangements required to welcome such a large international gathering.

According to Visit Faroe Islands, the Congress stood out for its strong academic programme, professional organisation, creativity and outstanding hospitality. It was also highlighted as an example of how an international conference can generate value not only for the academic community, but for society and the wider local economy.

For UArctic, the recognition is a testament to the commitment and collaboration of the University of the Faroe Islands and all the partners who helped make the Congress possible.

The Ambassador Day also saw Magni Mohr, Dean, Pro-Rector for Research and Professor of Exercise and Sports Physiology at the University of the Faroe Islands, named Ambassador of the Year 2026. Magni Mohr played an important role in bringing UArctic Congress 2026 to the Faroe Islands. His international academic network and long-standing commitment to international collaboration have helped raise the profile of Faroese research and the Faroe Islands as a destination for international conferences. He previously helped bring the international Football is Medicine conference to the Faroe Islands in 2020, which was also recognised as Ambassador Initiative of the Year.

The recognition of both UArctic Congress 2026 and Magni Mohr highlights the important role that academic networks, international collaboration and dedicated local hosts can play in bringing the Arctic research community together.
