Overall Activities

Training and Capacity Sharing:

  • Provide training and capacity-sharing programs for researchers and local communities through workshops, online courses, summer schools and field training sessions.

Collaborative Network:

  • Establish partnerships among research institutions, Indigenous communities, and government agencies to promote standardized methods and share best practices.

Synergize Knowledge on:

  • Conducting studies along the Arctic gradient represented by the Thematic Network institutions refine standardized methods, using feedback to make necessary adjustments.
  • Identifying, testing, and developing of new monitoring tools and platforms, such as eDNA, light GPS devices, remote sensing tools, including drones, automated camera and sound-trap systems. This allows the network to develop advice and guidelines on their use and calibration that are relevant for Arctic environments (considering temperature, remoteness, expected species, etc.)
  • Improving and implementing standardized protocols for data collection, including sampling methods, data recording, and reporting formats. Ensure consistent terminology and definitions for key concepts and identify variables of high value and ecological significance. Tailor the monitoring methods to relevant ecosystems and focal species and anticipate the connectedness of ecosystems.
  • Testing the methods on poorly monitored species, endangered species, and so-called ‘Focal Ecosystem Components’ i.e. species indicator of the ecosystem condition.
  • Developing community-based and community-led biodiversity monitoring initiatives.
  • Consulting Indigenous governments, organizations and People to identify species or processes of special importance for Indigenous communities. Teaching practices for efficient training and educational courses.
