Overall Activities

This network has three UArctic host organizations, with Memorial University of Newfoundland as the lead. The two host organizations are University of Lapland and University of Greenland. Together, the host organizations will implement a variety of initiatives and opportunities to support different capacities of youth engagement.

Youth or student representatives of the UArctic board will be active contributors to the goals and activities of the network to ensure the connection to youth is successful.

To ensure continuity of service, the lead organization will rotate every three years to distribute responsibilities while maintaining commitment to the goals and objectives of the network.

The main activities are hosting summits, and supporting research collaboration.

  • Summits and Gatherings
    • The network will organize a virtual bi-annual youth summit to increase connection to peers and other researchers
    • The network will organize an annual in-person event where young researchers can present their work and engage with experts
    • The network will help support travel funding for youth to attend the UArctic Congress, which takes place every second year
      • This will allow youth to connect with peers they have met at the annual summits, and opportunities to network with more established researchers
      • The network will host a side event meant for youth exclusively at the UArctic Congress
  • Research Collaboration
    • A mentorship program will offer support for youth to be paired with experienced researchers and professionals in Arctic studies to provide guidance and knowledge exchange
    • The network can facilitate joint research projects among youth, universities, and organizations, encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation
    • An online platform where discussion, networking and knowledge sharing can take place
      • Including a database of research opportunities, funding sources and educational materials
    • The network can identify partnerships with universities and research institutions to create opportunities for youth to gain practical experience.
    • The Collaborative Online International Learning and Biodiversity Education Network (COIL) would be a beneficial partner. The Youth Network could identify interest for potential projects, while the COIL Network could support collaboration among international youth and students
    • The Verdde Indigenous Education Network could also provide beneficial opportunities to collaborate and support initiatives between youth

A UArctic Thematic Network dedicated to youth will provide a critical space for fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and leadership development. This initiative will ensure that young voices are not only heard but actively contribute to shaping the future of the Arctic.
