The Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI) was founded on 1 January 2005. It is an educational and research institution in the field of agriculture and environmental sciences. The main focus is on the conservation and sustainable use of land and animal resources, including traditional agriculture, horticulture and forestry, environmental planning, restoration sciences, rural development and sustainable development. The AUI awards B.Sc. degrees in these fields, and is entitled to award MS and PhD degrees as well as providing vocational and continuing education in agriculture and horticulture.
AUI has been described as the "University of Life and Land", where focus is set on all kinds of land use, breeding, production protection and sustainable management of land resources. It is vital for the island of Iceland to be able to provide food for the nation and AUI strives to keep up with the latest technology and methods in agriculture at the uncertain times of global warming and its effect on Icelandic agriculture.
AUI is a very small unique university, the only university in Iceland with a vocational department and which focuses on Icelandic nature, its protection, maintenance and sustainable use and is the only school in Iceland which teaches agriculture on vocational level.
