The Taiwan Polar Institute (TaiPI), affiliated with the College of Earth Sciences at National Central University, integrates expertise in atmospheric sciences, space and remote sensing, ocean sciences, earth sciences, and sustainability sciences to conduct research on polar and high-latitude environments. Our work covers climate change, polar oceanography, ecology, glaciology, geology, geophysics, hydrology, and environmental monitoring technologies. We provide crucial scientific data and insights to address global climate change and sustainability challenges.

Polar changes represent critical tipping points in the global climate system, including ice sheet melting, Arctic sea ice reduction, and permafrost degradation. These processes have profound impacts on global weather patterns, sea levels, and ecosystems. TaiPI employs independent field observations, satellite remote sensing, and geophysical surveys to transition from being a "data recipient" to a "scientific data provider," enhancing Taiwan’s role in global climate governance.

TaiPI aligns its research with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Climate Action (SDG 13), Life Below Water (SDG 14), Life on Land (SDG 15), and Sustainable Water Management (SDG 6). Through science diplomacy and policy advising, we contribute to international environmental governance. Additionally, TaiPI has established the TaiArctic overseas workstation in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, strengthening Taiwan’s visibility and participation in Arctic research and international collaborations.
