The project will first, describe and analyze the significant geopolitical change that has happened in the Arctic region during the last 25 years; second, analyze the Arctic strategies / policies of, and national interests in the Arctic region by Russia and other Arctic states, as well as their policies and activities within major regional council, the AC and BEAC; and third, discuss on the Russian state policy in the Arctic and its perspectives, now and in the near future. The project also gives recommendations on how the Russian Arctic policy should look like in the coming years.
In the framework of the project, the team should deliver at least five short analytical notes to be published on the website of the Valdai Club, at least three scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals, and the final analytical report. NRF-UArctic Thematic Network on Geopolitics and Security receives grant from Valdai Discussion Club

The Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai International Discussion Club (valdaiclub.com) has awarded a grant for the international research group consisted of the members of the NRF-UArctic Thematic Network on Geopolitics and Security, Docent Lassi Heininen from University of Lapland, Finland, Professor Alexander Sergunin from St. Petersburg State University, Russia and Researcher Gleb Yarovoy, who is the coordinator of the project, from the Petrozavodsk State University, Russia. The team became one out of ten laureates of the Valdai Club’s research program. The research project “The Arctic – a region of strategies and policies. Avoiding a new Cold War” started in October 2012 and will run until July 2013.
