north2north Staff Mobility Report from Arctic Pedagogy research in Rovaniemi

Report Study Tour To Rovaniemi Flavia And Kristine

With the support of north2north, Flavia Devonas Hoffmann and Kristine Nielsen from the College of Social Education reflect on their trip to Rovaniemi, Finland from October 31st to November 10th.

The aim of the journey was to expand the network of PI/SPS with other institutions concerned with Arctic Pedagogy, to learn and get inspired how Arctic Pedagogy is implemented in practice in higher education in Sápmi. Thereby, we can examine what Arctic Pedagogy means for us and to understand how we can design learning environments through place-, community-, and culture-responsive practice.

The stay consisted of two parts:
1. Collaborative learning week organised by the SámiED-reserach group at the University of Lapland.

2. Participation at FERA-conference. Here, we participated at the pre-conference on AI in research. Also, we presented our work with the creative book project in a parallel session at the conference. We participated in key notes as well as the conference dinner and had several short, informal meetings with other researchers and project leaders at the conference.

Our 90min-session contained two presentations of 15minutes, which allowed us to have in-depth discussions about our project and our work.

Apart from the academic program, we experienced culture, nature and art in and around Rovaniemi. Overall, it was a very intresting, inspiring and productive journey. We established several new collaboration projects:
-
We got an official invitation to be part of ASAE (Arctic Sustainability Arts Education)
-
We agreed on a colaboration with the sámi researchers in Rovaniemi
-
We drafted a collaboration with sámi researchers in Kautokeino
-
Some members of the research group in Rovaniemi plan to visit us in Greenland and we issued official invitations to apply for travel funding.

We are grateful for the mobility support granted by north2north and the institutional support of the College of Social Education.
