New Open Access Volume Reimagines Climate and Ocean Justice Through Care and Law
A new open access edited volume, From Climate to Ocean Protection for a Just Future: Reimagining Justice with Care and Law (Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, 2026), has been published and is now freely accessible worldwide. The publication is part of the activities of the UArctic Thematic Network on Polar Research Cooperation and Diplomacy.
The volume was edited by Dr. Zia Madani of the University of Tsukuba, who served as First Editor, Professor Margherita Paola Poto of UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Youna McGowan, and Dana Ahmed. It brings together an international group of contributors working across environmental law, climate justice, ocean governance, education, and sustainability.
The book emerged from sustained interdisciplinary and international collaboration, including academic exchanges and discussions at various scientific events. Its open access publication was made possible through the generous financial support of UiT The Arctic University of Norway, enabling readers worldwide to access the complete volume without charge.
Endorsed in the context of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the book offers a comprehensive and accessible resource for academics, policymakers, legal practitioners, educators, advocates, grassroots organizations, and international institutions.
The volume advances interdisciplinary approaches to embedding care and justice within legal and governance frameworks. Its theoretical and applied contributions include analyses of landmark cases, community-based initiatives, and actionable recommendations for reimagining environmental governance.
Of particular relevance to the UArctic community, the volume examines Indigenous knowledge systems, community-led approaches, and the interconnected governance challenges confronting the Arctic. A dedicated chapter co-authored by Madani and Poto develops a just systems approach to water, energy, and food governance in the rapidly changing Arctic.
