Workshop on the Governance of Sea-Ice Geoengineering in the Arctic
On September 14, 2026, the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law, along with the UArctic Law Thematic Network and UArctic Chair in Arctic Legal Research and Education, held a full-day workshop focusing on sea-ice geoengineering governance in the Arctic.
The event took place at the Korundi House of Culture in Rovaniemi and was part of the Ice-Bridge project. It brought together researchers and experts to explore legal, governance, social, and ethical issues related to sea-ice geo-engineering in the Arctic. Key topics included various sea-ice geoengineering technologies that could be used in the region, their potential impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity, and Indigenous rights, and an assessment of how current regulatory frameworks address these challenges. The discussion also highlighted potential gaps and deficiencies in current laws concerning sea-ice geoengineering in the Arctic.
