A Seminar discussed the Arctic dimensions of human rights

Human Rights Centre, in collaboration with the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland, the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM), and the UArctic Law Thematic Network, organized a seminar on the 26th of October where human rights and the changing security environment were discussed, especially from the point of view of the Arctic region.

Moderated by Docent Leena Heinämäki, a researcher of the NIEM, the seminar discussed issues related to climate change, human rights, and human security from the viewpoint of the changing security environment of the Arctic. Seminar speakers included: Professors Timo Koivurova and Stefan Kirchner from the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and Assistant Professor Mirva Salminen from the UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Professor Kamrul Hossain – the UArctic Chair in Arctic Legal Research and Education and the Leader of the Law Thematic Network, Markku Heikkilä, the head of the Science Communication at the Arctic Centre, and Anni-Sofia Niittyvuopio, the chair of the Youth Council of the Saami Parliament.
