The workshop was organized on October 18 at the University of Iceland’s Veröld-House of Vigdís.
The workshop was divided into two sessions – the first session contained academic presentations by scholars from the participating universities in the project: Luleå University of Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of Iceland, University of Lapland, and Hokkaido University. The second part of the program included a roundtable discussion where representatives from Arctic cities as delegates from the Arctic Mayors’ Forum engaged in dialogue amongst themselves and with scholars. The roundtable discussions illustrated the challenges facing Arctic cities and how such challenges are being addressed with clear action plans to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The Barents Institute at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway leads the project with partners from Finland, Japan, and Sweden, and in collaboration with two University of the Arctic’s thematic networks, namely the Thematic Network on Arctic in Asia and Asia in the Arctic and the Thematic Network on Arctic Law. “ARCSUS+SDG: Governing Arctic Urban Sustainability through the lens of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals” is a three-year (2023-25) project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers t under its Arctic Cooperation Program.
