The Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research (NVP), in partnership with the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), is pleased to announce the NVP International Summer School 2026, entitled “The Global Arctic.”

This summer school is part of a broader interdisciplinary programme linking the Arctic, Antarctic, and Himalayan regions, and is specifically designed for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Learn more and apply here.

The summer school will take place from 7 to 17 June 2026 in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, with English as the working language. The programme will be held entirely in Longyearbyen and will combine lectures, discussions, and field-based activities focusing on the Arctic as a globally interconnected region.

The 2026 summer school will explore the rapidly increasing global significance of the Arctic, examining how climate change, globalization, and transboundary processes influence environmental conditions, geopolitics, security, and commercial development. This “one-pole” perspective on the Global Arctic will establish a conceptual foundation for subsequent summer schools that will expand the framework to include comparative perspectives from the Himalayan and Antarctic regions.

A central aim of the summer school is to foster interdisciplinary thinking and to equip participants with the skills needed to engage with complex and applied societal challenges. The curriculum is designed to encourage dialogue across disciplinary boundaries and to deepen understanding of how changes in the Arctic resonate far beyond the region itself.

PhD students and postdoctoral researchers are invited to apply by submitting a CV and a cover letter outlining their academic background, motivation, and the relevance of the summer school to their research. Applications must be submitted via NVP’s online application form.

The application deadline is 8 March 2026, and selected candidates will be notified by 31 March 2026.
