UArctic x LRF Fellows: Strengthening Arctic Science–Policy Links
From 16-19 March 2026, UArctic x LRF Research Fellow Dr Bahareh Kamranzad participated in the prestigious Royal Society Pairing Scheme 2026, an initiative designed to strengthen connections between scientific research and policymaking in the UK.
The scheme, delivered in partnership with the Government Science & Engineering (GSE) Profession, brings together a select group of researchers and policymakers for an intensive programme in Westminster. Through workshops, policy briefings, and direct engagement with government departments, participants gain insight into how scientific evidence informs national and international decision-making.
During the programme, Dr Kamranzad was paired with UK Department for Transport, where discussions focused on maritime decarbonisation, international policy coordination, and emerging challenges in Arctic navigation. These exchanges highlighted the growing importance of Arctic regions in global policy agendas, particularly as environmental change accelerates and new shipping routes evolve.
Dr Kamranzad’s participation aligns closely with her ongoing project, which investigates the impacts of climate change on marine heatwaves in the Arctic and the associated risks to navigational safety. The experience provided valuable perspectives on how such research can inform policy development and support evidence-based decision-making in sensitive and rapidly changing environments.
As a UArctic Fellow, Dr Kamranzad’s work contributes to the network’s mission of fostering international collaboration in Arctic research and education. Engagements such as the Royal Society Pairing Scheme play an important role in connecting scientific expertise with policy processes, ensuring that Arctic challenges are addressed through informed and coordinated approaches.
