Forthcoming Book on Innovative Rural Education Presented at UArctic Congress 2026
Members of the UArctic Thematic Network on Teacher Education for Social Justice and Diversity presented the forthcoming Bloomsbury Academic volume "Innovative Rural Education: International Perspectives on Supporting Multicultural Learning in the Digital Era" during a dedicated symposium at the UArctic Congress 2026 in the Faroe Islands.
Edited by Satu-Maarit Korte (University of Helsinki), Steve Burton (Leeds Beckett University), Minna Körkkö (University of Oulu), Edda Óskarsdóttir (University of Iceland), and Paul Adams (University of Strathclyde), the volume brings together international scholars and practitioners to explore how technology-enhanced education can support equitable, culturally responsive, and inclusive learning across rural and remote communities. Rather than viewing rurality as a limitation, the book positions rural and Indigenous contexts as important sites of educational innovation, where local knowledge, multilingualism, and community engagement play a central role in shaping meaningful learning.
The symposium brought together editors and chapter authors from Finland, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Canada, Hong Kong, and Mozambique, illustrating how the UArctic network provides a platform for international collaboration on shared educational challenges in rural and northern communities. Contributors presented research spanning Indigenous education, multilingualism, educational technology, teacher education, educational leadership, equity, and lifelong learning, demonstrating both the diversity of the volume and the common commitment to context-sensitive, inclusive education.
The lively discussions that followed highlighted the value of international partnerships in addressing shared challenges while recognising the distinctive cultural, linguistic, and geographical contexts that shape education across rural and Arctic regions.
