University of Southern Denmark

The University of Southern Denmark welcomed the first students onto the campus in Odense in September 1966, and things have been developing by leaps and bounds ever since. We now have five faculties with more than 27,000 students, almost 20% of whom are from abroad, and more than 3,800 employees distributed across our main campus in Odense and regional campuses in Slagelse, Kolding, Esbjerg and Sønderborg. Several international studies document that we conduct world-class research and are one of the top fifty young universities in the world. With around 115 different study programmes in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences and engineering, graduates of the University of Southern Denmark are now members of virtually every profession in the international community.

As a university, we play an important role in relation to the climate challenges. We create new knowledge through research and disseminate this knowledge through education and in collaboration with external parties. Further, SDU has tentatively set a goal of reducing the University’s CO2 emissions in 2030 by 57% compared to 2018. With this goal SDU meets the Danish government’s goal of a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2030 compared to 1990. Students and researchers at SDU are set to move the world in a more sustainable direction by creating the economic, social and environmental development laid down in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the Executive Board of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in June 2019 decided that these key goals were to become the focal point for SDU’s work as a university. Untill June 2022 the SDU membership of UArctic only regarded The Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics (SEBE) at the University of Southern Denmark. The Department is still an active partner of UArctic with several student and research activities and engagement in the thematic networks and plays a central role for SDU’s membership.
