World Maritime University

The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity building. The University offers unique postgraduate programmes, undertakes wide-ranging research in maritime and ocean-related studies, and continues maritime capacity building in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, while promoting the role of women in the maritime and ocean sectors worldwide.

WMU’s MSc and PhD degrees are accredited by the Government of Sweden. The University has offered the degree of Master of Science since 1983. The programme offers professional education for the international maritime and oceans community. Its has been designed to offer interdisciplinary breadth, areas of deeper study and a firm foundation for the students’ research. The programme is offered under seven specializations: Maritime Education and Training; Maritime Energy Management; Maritime Law and Policy; Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration; Ocean Sustainability, Governance & Management; ; Port Management; Shipping Management and Logistics.

The Doctor of Philosophy degree has been offered since 2003 and it has been designed to offer professional education in research. Each approved research topic is established within a Research Priority Area, and the framework of international Conventions and agreements by which it is governed.

As a United Nations educational institution, WMU is intrinsically an international HEI, with staff from five continents, and students and alumni from more than 170 countries and territories. The Master of Science programme is delivered in China by WMU collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University. WMU builds capacity and serves the global community of maritime professionals. WMU has  5,807 graduates, reflecting the global population of the maritime industry.
