PANELISTS ANNOUNCED: UArctic Webinar on Ethics in Northern and Indigenous Research

Panelists have been announced for the first session of the 2026 UArctic Webinar Series on Ethics in Northern and Indigenous Research, taking place online on May 13, 2026, bringing together leading experts from academic, community, and policy backgrounds. The panel will explore ethical frameworks, Indigenous research governance, and the importance of trust, relationships, and institutional responsibility in supporting community-driven research.

UArctic and Memorial University are pleased to invite you to the first session of the 2026 UArctic Webinar Series, which will focus on the vital theme of Ethics in Northern and Indigenous Research.

This webinar brings together an exceptional group of panelists who are deeply engaged in this work across academic, community, and policy contexts:

  • Moderator: Maike Schmeiding - Research Chair, Northern Community Sustainability, Keyano College, and Chair of the Research Ethics Board
  • Georgina Martin – Professor, Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies, Vancouver Island University
  • Carla Pamak - Inuit Research Advisor, Nunatsiavut Government
  • Sarah Schmidt ­– Interim Vice President, Academic and Student Experience, Keyano College

Each panelist brings unique experience and insight from community-based research to institutional leadership. Together, they will explore ethical frameworks for research in Northern contexts, with a focus on Indigenous research governance and community leadership. The discussion will highlight the importance of building long-term relationships and trust, and examine institutional responsibilities and best practices that support respectful, accountable, and community-driven research.
